Explanation of Korean Terms and Honorifics
Oppa (오빠) = Older brother (used by males)
A polite way for a younger female to address a male who is older
Noona (누나) = Older sister (used by males)
A polite way for a younger male to address a female who is older
Hyung (형) = Older brother (used by males)
A polite way for a younger male to address a male who is older
Unnie (언니) = Older sister (used by females)
A polite way for a younger female to address an female who is older
Ssi (씨)
Most commonly used honorifics between people of approximately equal speech level. It is attached to the full name, such as 'Kim Namjoon-ssi' or simply after the first name, ' Namjoon-ssi' if the speaker is more familiar with someone.
-A (아) / -ya (야)
A casual title used at the end of names. It is not gender exclusive and it is used only between close friends and people who are familiar with each other. If a name ends in a consonant -a is used (e.g. Jinyoung-a 진영아), while -ya is used if the name ends in a vowel (e.g. Youngjae-ya 영재야).
